The Great Wall
© 2001 Patricia Gould

I chose to depict The Great Wall of China in fiber since it made a huge impression on me
when I walked upon it. The way the masonry and clay walls meander across the spines of
these very sharp hills is intriguing. Only small sections have been restored, while the
majority of it is being slowly reclaimed by the earth. This restored section is a beautiful
example of the prominence of the structure, as the walls and towers march across
thousands of miles of harsh landscape. Ironically, this incredible structure was built over the
centuries to keep China safe from foreign invasions, yet today is one of the main tourist
attractions , drawing visitors from the entire world.
