DIAMONDS & RUST

As a challenge to myself, I often switch gears from my representational work and morph into the abstract realm
to just concentrate on the pure beauty of the fibers and embellishments. I started out just playing with two
metallic colors, silver and copper. I worked with metals for many years and always loved the relationship
between silver and copper; that has remained in my color choices with fibers.

As I was cutting pieces of fabrics and yarns for the collage, the Joan Baez song, Diamonds & Rust kept
haunting me. As I was looking at the pieces, it made sense; here was the contrast between diamonds, the
precious gem created over time from coal, and copper, a beautiful, shiny metal that transforms as it ages and
rusts. When I was pressing the copper side, my iron melted some of the lamé fabric and made it look like it had
rusted, how perfect!
“We both know what memories can bring; they bring diamonds and rust.”
